Contra la opinión de parte de la crítica, que ve en los escritos religiosos de DAVID HUME (1711-1776) mera curiosidad culturalista, o incluso irreverencia e ironía, el interés del pensador escocés por que sus Diálogos sobre la religión natural se vieran publicados aun después de su muerte desmiente que diera poca importancia a este tema. Si bien la actitud de Hume hacia la experiencia religiosa pudo ser escéptica, la indudable presencia en esta obra -como apunta en su prólogo Carlos Mellizo- de todos aquellos temas básicos presentes en todo sistema de ideas o creencias religiosas hacen de ella no sólo una indagación sobre la religión, sino también, en su dimensión estrictamente filosófica, uno de los pilares fundamentales del pensamiento moderno en torno al tema del teísmo especulativo

Bis auf Inseln wie den Buddhismus und Zarathustrismus ist die religiöse Welt des antiken Indiens und Irans noch immer wissenschaftliches Brachland - obwohl sich sowohl die griechische und römische, als auch die jüdische und christliche Religionsgeschichte doch nur in Wechselwirkung mit ihr entwickelt haben kann. Die urwüchsigste Kulttradition dort war das Somaopfer. Aus den überreichen Quellen detailliert rekonstruierbar, wurden bereits vor hundert Jahren auffällige Parallelen zur christlichen Taufe gesehen. Die asymmetrische Debatte darüber verebbte aber bald schon wieder. Schärfere Fokussierung zeigt jedoch, dass sich die Parallelen und Kongruenzen durchziehen: von Jesu Kindheitsgeschichten bis zum frühmorgendlichen Drama seiner Auferstehung.

While comparative studies on purity and impurity presented in the last decades have mostly concentrated on the ancient world or on modern developments, this volume focusses the hitherto comparatively neglected period between circa 300 and 1600 c. E. The collection is innovative because it not only combines papers on both European and Asian cultures but also considers a wide variety of religions and confessions. The articles are written by leading experts in the field and are presented in six systematic sections. This analytical categorization facilitates understanding the functional spectrum that the binomial purity and impurity could cover in past societies. George Whitehead was a key figure in Quakerism from around 1660 until his death in 1723, but he has been neglected in recent scholarship. He was an effective political lobbyist in the struggle for religious toleration and was active in the developing work of the national Quaker bodies, Yearly Meeting, Meeting for Sufferings, and the Morning Meeting. He was also a leader in the adaptation of Quaker theology to the needs of the late seventeenth century. In his old age he was involved in the campaign to permit Quakers to use a form of affirmation instead of judicial oaths. This study by Rosemary Moore begins with an account of his life, using his memoirs and other contemporary sources, continues with a consideration of his published works, including his understanding of the 'light within', and concludes with a look at his place in Quaker history in comparison with George Fox and William Penn.
